While your points about creating and maintaining your brand are good, I totally disagree with your premise. Branding is for everyone, leader or not. If you're a follower, brand yourself as such, applying all the principles you've mentioned. Everyone is a leader in some way. Every adult who wants to earn an income needs to identify, articulate, and advertise his/her brand.

This wasn't always the case, but our economy and technology have resulted in realities that are new. No one keeps one job for life anymore. And so many of our problems stem from that undifferentiated employee mentality that disrespects the self and does nothing for business growth.

You might be a lowly admin assist, you might even be the janitor, but that does not excuse you from the challenge to define your values and to articulate how you wish to serve. It might be a slightly different level of branding, but it's branding nonetheless. In a post-industrial world, anonymity is neither possible nor desirable for anyone, leader or not.

Branding is definitely important if you want to stand out from the crowd. MSN recently ran an article about it. I cannot agree more that you want to brand yourself carefully in this day and labor market.
