How to Create a Store on Facebook

I believe that in the years ahead Facebook will become not only a place to connect with friends and family but a place to buy and purchase stuff.

We have updated this page with some great new options for creating a Facebook storefront..

I’ve seen quite a few store front applications pop up for Facebook and I have been wanting to try one for a while. One such application is called Payvment. This application allows you quickly and easily create a storefront on a facebook page.

I had our storefront (You Brand, Inc. Storefront on Facebook) with one product set up within 15 minutes. Not bad for adding e-commerce to a Facebook fanpage. We also highly recommend the following system if you want to really learn how to sell on Facebook.

Here is a screenshot of our store below.

Abraham Lincoln and Social Media

When Abraham Lincoln was faced with keeping the United States together during the Civil War he was fortunate to have a new technology– the Telegraph. For history buffs this historical record gives us amazing insight into the war and the mind of President Lincoln himself. President Lincoln never kept a diary but the his thanks to his telegraph records we get a peek at his thoughts and it reveals how comfortable he was with this new technology.

What spurred these thoughts for me was I recently watched a great program on C-Span (Mr. Lincolns T-Mails) from Tom Wheeler where he speaks about his book, “Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War.”

During this time the telegraph was a new device (used primarily by the financial industry) and no national leader during wartime had ever had technology access to such a powerful communication device. Suddenly it was possible to get a fast and fuller view of the battlefield from every theater of engagement. The Telegraph provided Lincoln with the thoughts of his generals, reports from spy’s, and in some cases near instant reports from long away battlefields. Quite a few historians have argued this tipped the balance of power for the President and his cause to re-unify the nation.

That’s where I thought about today, what new communication technology do we have at our hands?

How to Use Priming in Social Media

Priming Areas of the brain

Priming is a psychological term that essentially explains how an earlier stimulus influences response to a later stimulus. For instance, if I give you a list of words and I include the word ‘table’ and later ask you to complete a word starting with ‘tab’, the probability that you will answer table is higher than if you weren’t primed.

For years priming has been the study of modern media such as television and video games. Maybe you’ve heard of how we are priming people to act out violently based on violence across all forms of entertainment. The media has really pushed that exposure to “media violence” can prime subsequent aggressive behaviors, cognition’s, or perceptions. Politics of course picked it up and started using ‘priming effects’ for moral and ethical issues.

I believe priming is one of the most powerful factors of positioning and connecting in social media. Understanding the elements of priming can make you a more effective communicator and increase your effectiveness in social media.

Social Media Kills Brain Cells [mock study]

Okay, first I’ve been studying social media. Well not formally and not with in the triple blind and an army of PHD’s or lab rats kind of way. But rest assured I’ve been studying what it does to businesses and professionals.

My study has concluded that it kills brain cells–and that’s a bad thing. I thought I heard a few years ago that brain cells grow back but I wasn’t able to find any search results that helped:

What is Twine and Why You Should Use It

Twine LogoTwine is a social networking site that allows you to connect anything you find online within one inter-twined conversation. From Facebook, Myspace, Digg, De.li.cous, Bebo, Twitter, blogs,  etc… all are connected within a conversation or twine in one place.

Essentially a very robust comment stream with multiple contributors. These interests help to group your personal interests and also allow you to connect with other Twiners that share your interests as well.

A Twine can include: Bookmarks, Pictures, Videos, and soon more. Also other Twiners then can leave comments on your Twines and the links to the content giving praise or criticism to those links. The power of Twine is where you can create Twines and share insights, links, posts, and other content within the twine. Others who are interested in the same topic can add comments, additional links, posts, blogs, videos, the list is endless.

Analytics for Social Media

I’ve been testing and using what I consider to be a great application for tracking my social media activity.

SWIX is like Google Analytics for social media. You wouldn’t run an important web-site without tracking your traffic patterns, nor should you invest in social media without understanding how it’s working for you.

Here is what I like about Swix:

4 Tips to reaching the finish line in social engagement. (image by Rykerstribe)

We had a social media marketing presentation yesterday to a group of entrepreneurs, business owners, and people responsible for marketing. I appreciate every piece of feedback good or bad as it gives me an tremendous insight about what people feel and think about social media.

Here are my brief thoughts on this…

Find Your Target Market On Twitter

I’ve been using a great tool to find our target market on Twitter.

FollowWonk allows you to easily and quickly find your target market by searching Twitter user bio’s.  I like this tool better than others because it allows you sort your search, search by location, friend/follower counts, and displays the results in a very easy to use list.

I put togehter a quick video:
