New technology was launched by the Pro League Committee in association with Etisalat and Media Pro. Thursday’s Arabian Gulf Cup final between Al Wahda and Al Wasl became the first football match ever to be fully broadcast live through Virtual Reality technology.

Football fans from across the globe watched the game through the Virtual Seat Project, launched by the Pro League Committee in association with Etisalat and Media Pro. The ‘Etisalat VR’ app which is available on Andriod and iOS, broadcasts matches through VR technology using the dedicated glasses which enables viewers to follow and engage with every aspect of the match, including replays and match statistics on virtual screens.

PLC CEO, Waleed Al Hosani, expressed his delight with the success of the experience, lauding the efforts of the PLC partners Etisalat and Media Pro and insisting that the VR experience took a lot of preparations and studies to see the light and become a reality for fans of UAE football on this big day. Al Hosani explained that the PLC, in addition to working on developing the broadcast system and creating new channels, is eager to make the PLC competitions more attractive for fans through several projects that aim to transform matches into festive carnivals.

The CEO said the Virtual Seat project is part of the PLC’s 2017-2020 strategic plan which emphasises enhancing the sporting innovation culture and keeping up with the latest developments in the world of football through increased adoption of technology and smart apps as well as bringing joy to fans with an enhanced match viewing experience and developing relations with partners and sponsors by engaging in joint projects that deliver benefits to all stakeholders.
